A development of 10 luxury retirement living apartments on a former vehicle showroom and sales yard in Rustington, Littlehampton for Renaissance Retirement.

Our response to the client’s brief and local context was to suggest traditional forms and materials arranged in a contemporary composition, combining bed brick and knapped flint with large windows and glazed gables. The scale of the building is broken down by arranging accommodation within a series of linked pavilions which define an internal atrium. The pavilions present a familiar scale and silhouette to neighbouring residential buildings achieving a positive contribution to the local character.

Strong gable forms are finished in knapped flint, bounded by simple red brick surrounds. Articulation is achieved through the use of recessed and projecting balconies to create shadow and depth to the facades. Use of the roof void achieves additional sellable floor area and creates dramatic double height feature spaces within upper floor apartments.

The project achieved first time consent with a delegated approval.
